3 Tips for Adding Colour to Kids’ Rooms with Accessories
Switching up accessories in any room is a great way to freshen things up without a huge investment, commitment to a new paint colour, or the mess involved with actually redecorating. In kids’ bedrooms, it’s also a great way to move with the times as their age and interests change. You can add a pop of colour or personality (like with our wonderful moth prints below) without needing a full-scale overhaul for each milestone.
It can also really help set the emotional tone in their room. A space that feels truly theirs, where they feel comfortable, safe, and ready to rest (and play).
If you’re renting too, accessories are a great way to put your stamp on a space without changing anything permanent.
With that in mind, here are my three tips for how to refresh without redoing a child’s bedroom.
Our Apples and Pears Print is perfect for adding a splash of colour.
Tip 1: Use Soft Furnishings for Instant Colour
Cushions, throws, rugs, and bedding can act as really quick colour boosters and cover large portions of any room. By mixing patterns and textures for visual interest, you don’t need to go all out with bright colours everywhere. Unless you want to! Picking a few key items like a statement rug or some bright cushions that reflect your child's personality can act as a focal point in otherwise neutral surroundings.
These kinds of soft textures also bring a sense of comfort and security. Perfect for bedtime routines or creating a calming wind-down space. Curtains (blackout and thermal ideally) can introduce a theme while also helping with restful sleep.
Comfortable, washable, and durable fabrics are definitely the way to go with kids’ bedrooms too.

Tip 2: Add Playful Colour Through Wall Accessories
Wall art, posters, and bunting are probably my favourite way to bring colour without making any permanent changes. Whatever your child is into, there’s something out there that can make their bedroom feel like their own special space.
Framing prints doesn’t need to be expensive. There are beautiful, budget-friendly options available from major retailers, or from local independent shops. Removable hooks are brilliant if you don’t want to (or can’t) put nails in the walls.
A few themed accessories can tie everything together. Think lampshades, bookends, or soft toys that echo the same colours or theme. It doesn’t take much to feel thoughtful.
We have a lovely range of prints on our site too, from animal themes and newborn pieces to gentle affirmations for older children.

Tip 3: Bring Colour in with Functional Accessories
Kids' rooms need to work hard as well as feel comforting. And storage doesn’t have to be boring. Storage baskets, toy boxes, and shelves in fun colours or natural textures are great ways to add personality to a space while keeping it practical.
Colour-coded or themed storage can even help children feel more in control of their space. This can be especially helpful for anxious or sensitive kids. You could source second-hand pieces to upcycle or search by colour or theme to find the right fit for your home.
Including your child in the process (depending on their age) can be really fun too. It gives them a chance to express their preferences and take pride in their space.
There are so many ways to refresh a child’s room without breaking the bank or overhauling everything. A few well-chosen accessories can make a big difference. Not just to how the room looks, but to how your child feels in it.
