Creating a Cosy Christmas Bedroom for Children
I love Christmas. I love the decorations, the music, the gift giving, the magic. Like many, I can’t wait to get the decorations up, pop a Christmas film on and start wrapping presents and writing Christmas cards.
For children, it’s such an exciting time and it’s so special to see their faces light up from all the wonderful sights, smells and feelings that Christmas delivers.
As part of decorating the house, many people love to add festive decorations to their kids rooms. I love this idea, but would also encourage it to be a lighter touch than perhaps the rest of the house. Bedrooms are still designed for rest and, though exciting Christmas lighting or trees might look great during the daytime, we still need to make sure that their rooms are designed for rest when the evening comes. Here are my tips for adding a touch of Christmas magic, without topping up the excitement at bedtime.
1. Start with a Christmas Bedroom Colour Palette
When it comes to creating a cosy Christmas bedroom, it can be tempting to dive straight into baubles and tinsel, but starting with a gentle colour palette can make all the difference. Soft, child-friendly combinations, whether that’s the classic red and green, a sweet pastel Christmas look, or simple Nordic neutrals, can help set the scene without overwhelming the space. Think of adding hints of colour through cushions, blankets or little accents rather than covering every surface. This way, the room still feels calm and restful, while quietly embracing the magic of the season.
2. Add Magical Lighting
Lighting is one of the easiest ways to bring a touch of Christmas wonder into a child’s bedroom, but it’s also something to approach thoughtfully. Cool-touch fairy lights draped safely across a shelf or around a bedframe can add a soft sparkle that feels festive without being overstimulating. A gentle night-light shaped like a star, snowflake or even a friendly reindeer can create that magical glow children adore, while still supporting a peaceful bedtime routine.
3. Cosy Christmas Accessories
Christmas accessories are where you can really lean into the fun, while still keeping the bedroom a snug and soothing space. Seasonal bedding, with subtle patterns or sweet festive characters, can instantly bring cheer without making the room feel too busy. Alternatively, a couple of themed cushions, like a gingerbread friend or a cuddly snowman, can add personality and comfort. In our house, we love children’s snowglobes and soft seasonal teddies which offer that extra sprinkle of Christmas magic and are used year after year.
4. Add Personalised Holiday Magic
One of the most special parts of decorating a child’s bedroom at any time of year is letting them add their own magic. Simple homemade decorations, like paper snowflakes stuck to a window or their wardrobe door, feel extra meaningful when they’ve made them themselves. Creating a cosy reading nook filled with their favourite festive stories invites quiet moments and becomes a lovely December ritual.
5. Keep It Practical and Safe
Amid all the excitement, it’s important to remember that their bedroom is ultimately a place for rest. Keeping decorations simple and safe ensures the room remains comfortable and uncluttered. Avoid anything with tiny detachable pieces if you have younger children, always choose cool-touch lights for peace of mind and make sure walkways stay clear to avoid accidents.
I hope that these tips encourage you to create a space with your own family that balances the magic of Christmas with the comfort of sleep and enjoy adding those festive touches that make bedtime special in December.
